Vanessa Oter

I first stumbled across Vanessa Oter’s work via Instagram approximately 18months ago (what on earth did we do before Instagram by the way?!). At this stage, we had just begun working on plans with an architect for the build of our ‘forever home’ at Bateau Bay. Think high ceilings, stone fireplace, timber details and a mix of modern and traditional finishes – with some beautiful native landscaping to complement. I absolutely fell in love with a particular piece of Vanessa’s that I thought would look AMAZING on a large wall that led to an upstairs void. Long story short, Kyal and I very quickly realised that we have plenty more renovations in us before we are ready to build our ‘forever’ home – so our little beach shack is still standing, and our plans for this property are a continued work in progress. Inspired by her natural surroundings in Victoria’s Gippsland, Vanessa’s work complements a home with native charm – and is hence the reason I fell in love. One day, my home will be filled with art that pays homage to the beautiful country we live in – and I’m sure a piece of Vanessa’s will be there.

Could you tell us a bit about your background and path that led to your current artist endeavors?

I've always been a creative person. I've always loved drawing, I dreamt of being a cartoonist when I was little!! We used to have exhibitions in the school corridor at primary school and the pride I took with my drawings of snoopy and other TV characters was intense!! So competitive!

I was brought up by immigrant parents who really wanted me to do what I loved. They knew art was a tough gig but knew I had that inner determination to keep trying and working. I eventually went to RMIT and majored in painting. After art school I travelled around the world living and working mostly in NYC for the most part. I had 5 solo exhibitions there. When I came home 10 years later I found solace in study and went straight back to art school and did my honours year. I've had a child in between and have given my all to my art despite monetary limitations at times! At the moment I am enjoying my painting for a few up coming shows all over Victoria!

What motivates you to create your art?

I bought a house in Gippsland 4 years ago and use my surroundings as a muse. It's stunning here.

I'm represented by Scott Livesey Galleries in Armadale, VIC www.scottliveseygalleries.com

Can you tell us one of your favourite artists?

Julian Schnabel. Incredible painter and film maker.

Describe your dream home and location.

I'd love a huge Victorian Country house with a wrap around verandah somewhere in Gippsland where the only neighbour is a rolling hill with sheep and cows on them!

Do you have artwork displayed in your home? If so what kind?

I love my Aboriginal Collection. Rosie Kangwere, Lena Pwerle. I hang my own work. I have lots of art from artist friends abroad. And my son’s paintings, he makes such beauties!

Name one item in your home you could not do without.

My Indonesian Day Bed. It doubles as a guest bed, comfy desk and it plays home to my Kantha throws and cushions! Love it!

When you are not creating your masterpieces, where could we find you?

Walking my dogs and decorating my home in the country.
