Yes, we do love most things related to surfing, but there's something fun that captures our eye when we see Aaron Godina's work.  It's like we're mind-surfing back to a weekend away - up the coast - scoring waves with friends.  When you find art that makes you happy, you know you're on to a good thing!

Could you tell us a bit about your background and the path that led to your current artistic endeavours?

I've always drawn and painted and had a bit of an artistic streak, but never really knew what to do with it.  I studied illustration when I finished school but spent more time bailing on class to go surfing than actually studying!  After dropping out I got in the routine of working and saving up to travel and go surfing, and wasn't painting much.  After settling down with my wife and having kids (twins Marley and Roman) I found the time and passion to paint again, and developed my current style, which is generally based around the escapism and freedom of the surfing lifestyle.

What inspires you to create your art?

The inspiration behind each piece I create is attempting to capture a feeling within the artwork.  Kind of like how a great photo can capture a perfect moment amongst chaos.  If someone tells me an artwork reminds them of a place they have been or can stimulate an emotion, then I feel like I've succeeded as an artist.

Where would we be likely to see your artwork?

I've recently completed a large mural on a wall in Jan Juc, Victoria.  I do a number of group shows every year around Australia and internationally.  I'm currently trying to organise my first solo show for later in the year.  The best place to keep up to date with my progress in on Instagram.

Can you tell us one of your favourite artists?

I've got so many it's hard to choose, but I love how Jonas Claesson can create an illustration which is simple, detailed, humorous and can capture a moment at the same time.  Honourable mentions to Craig Parnaby, Jeff Raglus and Tyler Warren.

Describe your dream home and location.

How many can I have?  Ha ha!  I really love the Northern Rivers, Byron  Bay area and would be hard to pick a better spot.  Dream home would be a light and open weatherboard Queenslander, with plenty of lush grass and a large garage/studio with a glass roof.  Oh, and a perfect right hand point break in the front yard!

Do you have artwork displayed in your home? What kind?

I have a few of my own pieces tucked away in some of the rooms, aswell as some artwork from the kids.  I have some Craig Parnaby prints, and we are currently trying to choose a larger original piece as a feature in the living room but it's too hard to choose!!  Most of the artworks have a beach feel - it's definitely the theme of the house.

Name one item in your home that you could not do without.

Probably the coffee machine - it definitely gets a workout!

When you're not creating masterpieces, where would we find you?

I try and get in the surf any chance I get.  Living in Melbourne, I have options for waves in both directions and plenty of perfect (cold!) waves.  I also love to travel any chance I get.  Whether it's a run down the coast or an overseas trip, it's something we are very fortunate to be able to do.
